The contract rose 31 cents on Friday to settle at $101.18 after dropping as low as $99.99 per barrel. Of course the water is coming over the sea walls...some of the docks are water level...pretty much like it was in Gustav right now.

Well, I was walking along the water's edge, sand pelting me in the face with the gusts.. I happened to look up. I stopped DEAD in my tracks.. lol.. It took a few seconds for it to register in my head - it was the PINK FLAMINGO people have been talking about! Thank the LORD I had my camera. I didn't want to get too close and spook it, so I think I took about 50 pictures of it so I would make sure to get a good shot. lol. I used Google Picasa to zoom into the pics... Enjoy.

PS - If you want to see it yourself... the flamingo was on Norriego Point...Pass side, at the first "beach" towards the Harbor/Pass entrance.

Other IKE pics:

What gives these guys the right???

I am sitting here listening to the Weather Channel's latest on-the-scene "reporting" of Hurricane Ike's progress since it came on shore. And Specifically Mike Siddell's shoddy speculative reporting on towns that he hasn't even visited nor had any updated information since yesterday afternoon, what is he thinking???
He is talking about the storm surge and uses phrases like "so that town should be decimated by now", or "I expect those homes will be flattened" or "there probably is nothing left of that area of town" when referring to specific towns, areas of towns, and specific housing developments!!! My God!! How does he think people who have relatives and friends who live there or the residents themselves would feel hearing that their entire town is "decimated"???? That is some of the poorest quality speculative reporting that I have seen lately and I think that those on-the-spot reporters are doing a grave disservice to bringing the public objective coverage of a natural disaster!!! To take random guesses as to the condition of someone's living area is just not called for in my opinion when they don't even have any factual information to substantiate their reporting!

I can understand the melodramatic effects that they tend to use when they are suddenly blown off their feet by a gust of wind but, let's get real people, what the hell are they doing standing out in a full fledged hurricane anyway trying to shout above the screaming wind about the flying debris that is slapping against the buildings and all the glass shards that are flying around threatening their very life and limbs?????

GET INSIDE AND FIND A SAFE PLACE TO REPORT, YA DUMBASS!!!

Do y'all consider this to be good quality reporting or are these "weather glory hunters" going a bit overboard to enhance their otherwise boring day to day job??? I have heard very very little of a positive note from any of them on how the evacuation helped or what the local LEO's are doing to help out or any other positive notes to help with an otherwise very destructive storm, possibly the most devastating storm of this season!

There was a female reporter on Fox that was reporting from the stairwell of the hotel that she took shelter in and she was one of the very few smart reporters that I heard so far this morning!

Some Ike pics around Destin

Feel sorry for Texas when Ike hits, these are some pics around Destin today

The ramp at Joe's Bayou this morning

The East Jetty

Looking west from the East Jetty across the Destin east pass to the West Jetty

Looking east along the beach at Jetty East Condo. We turned the corner and over by their marina we saw this familiar boat sitting on its trailer. Low and behold after further investigation, it turned out to be our old boat, the first Reel Finatical! It felt so strange. The closer we got to her the more we saw our old dents, amateur patchwork on the hull, the stuff I had changed out last summer... wow!!.. We were told it had been shipped to Ft Lauderdale, but I think that was BS. It felt weird, like reuniting with a family member! lol All those memories started flooding our minds. Almost a year later & she's sitting behind our house almost - too cool. =) I wonder who the new owners are - military visiting from GA or MS maybe? Anyone know the Keep R Wet family?

Mattie Kelley Park Pier:

Norriego Point @ 10:30am: Water was over the seawall at that last condo.

Video: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-7947260456574666284&hl=en

Pic:

Okaloosa Island - some guy wanted to surf but the lifeguard turned him away, lol.

Video: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=703063199263121725&hl=en

Pic:

Gustav Photos

Went out this morning to take a few photos, these were around 10am. He had just come off his roof and had bloody knees. He was glad he stayed so he could repair the roof damage pronto without more occuring. He said he hasn't received much info on damage up and down the bayou. Capt. Joe Schoeust is doing fine. If he sends pics I will post them. If anyone has more info on this area, please post.

Storm Surge/ Wave Height Question

Sea level is at elevation 0. At normal high tide maybe its at about elevation +1. At low tide, maybe its at about elevation -1. Storm surge in Destin is predicted to be 3 feet. I take it that this means it will rise to 3 feet above normal high and low tides. So if it hits at low tide, the sea level will rise to about elevation +2. If it hits at high tide, the sea level will rise to about elevation +4. Is this true?

Simultaneous to the storm surge of 3 feet, I read that seas will be 25 feet.

Does this mean that, where the depth to the bottom of the seafloor is deep enough to accomodate the 25 foot waves without them collapsing ont themselves, the peak of the waves will rise to elevation 12.5 and that the nadir of the waves will be at elevation -12.5?

What will keep the 25 foot waves from hitting the shore and creating a surge much higher than the predicted 3 feet, and how do you translate the surge into an actual elevation.

Why I ask: A friend owns a condo on Holiday Isle, whose parking level is at elevation +7. The marine forecast calls for 25 foot seas in the "near coastal" waters. The predicted storm surge is 3 feet. Assuming the seas do in fact get to 25 feet, and the storm surge is in fact 3 feet, will the parking level at elevation +7 remain dry?

Thanks fellow nerds...

Gustav Forms

We now have a nice sized hurricane Gustav. He is in Vazoo City at a family reunion at the moment (Susan couldn't make the 5 hour one way trip) and has to leave as soon as he can, we just got off the phone with them. He has Harley biker friends coming up from the coast to park their campers (5 so far waiting on his return) and wait out the storm. I know he would welcome anyone of my forum family to hitch a spot in his LARGE ...Very Large, homestead. Should any of you need a parking spot please don't stay and call me and I'll see about setting up one up for you. 17 miles off I-55 at exit 20. He probably has enough room for a couple hundred.

Where to go?

Several of us from the MS coast are planning to come your way if the predicted track comes true. Any suggestions where to put 45ft boats (I hope haven't left myself too open with that). I have a 22ft at Sherman Cove they may make me move anyway. Unfortunatley, a close friend just passed away and I've taken responsibility for his immaculate 45 ft Carver cruiser. His daughter has given me a free hand in what I think is best. If we are told to evacuate boats and the storm heads west, I just wanted some ideas where to go inthe P?C area. The family is well off and covering all fuel and docking.

Thanks

in need of place to park a couple boats

I need to park a couple boats out of flood level, if anyone can offer any suggestions, it would be appreciated. I know, its too soon to tell but just looking at the paths and weather patterns, it just seems like the state of FL is a tropical storm/hurricane magnet this year. Let's hope this is just the coffee and the drama on TWC rubbing off on me... I'd just hate to think of what the state would look like after the massive rainfall of Fay, and 2 possible major hurricanes... This is not a prediction, just a thought and something to think about..
