Wind was the right direction for fishing Hogtown Bayou after work.  Got out there at about 5:15pm.  Mullet everywhere and they were all different sizes.  So many on the flats that it was difficult to fish without hitting them while working the bait.  Fished a bunch of different flats with a bunch of different baits.  Through spoons, topwater, soft plastic jerk baits and DOA under popping cork.  Nothing.  Not even a bite.  The wind died down enough to try and sight fish a little, but again, so many mullet it was hard to tell what was redfish and what was mullet.  Sucked.

Sounds like you should've gave it just a little while longer, they were "everywhere"! I was into shcools of 7 - 8 a lot! You're right about the Mullet, that place is loaded with them. Had sometimes 50 - 60 of them in the 18" range and bigger always around me. And when I came around a dock light, I was just waiting for them to accidently jump in the boat, thought they were trained by Barnum and Bailey! Hope you have better luck next time!

Sounds a lot like "should have been here an hour ago, it was going off!"  Did you see them in that same place?  I'm sure they were mixed in with the mullet.  Just couldn't get the bait in the right place I guess.  That grass over there makes it a hard place to fish.  Can't just let a bait sit or you will bring it in with nothing but grass.  I think wade fishing in some of those really shallow areas would have been the way to go, but I had my dog, so there is no way she would have stayed in the boat.  See any flounder?

A few years ago I was wade fishing and the mullet were thick like you described. I got frustrated trying to catch a redfish so I tied on a large brown treble hook to snatch some mullet. Threw the treble out snatched a couple of times and wham, fish on. Instead of a mullet it turned out to be a redfish hooked inside the mouth with the 6/0 treble hook!  Figured that was a fluke but a few casts later another red inhaled the bare hook. I was cranking the treble at warp speed to keep it out of the grass. Never did snatch a mullet. It really was wild and sounds unbelievable but it happened.
