Could someone advise how the conditions in the Gulf were today.  I have read the marine forecast and it indicates 1' to 3'.

I would like to go out bottom fishing tomorrow in a 22' boat.  I went out about three weeks  ago with a 1' to 3' forecast and and it was so rough the bait boat couldn't fish and when we got to the Russian Freighter to fish with frozen cigar minnows, it was so rough we couldn't stand up.

Appreciate any advice.

It has been down right pretty all week and weekend. Picking up a little in the afternoon. If the weather pattern holds I say go for it.

should be like a lake at daylight.... maybe a few rollers from the SSW in the 1'-2' range.... SW wind will pick up around 12pm... might get a tid bit bumpy.

I hit the pass a 3pm this afternoon and my girl was nervouse cause of the 5' rollers coming in.  I saw a lot of boats turn around.  We got out of the pass and it was 1-2s at 3 second intervals.  Coming in it was pretty smooth.  I ran 33 all the way in a 26' boat and could have walked around.  Just watch the pass but it should be good.

Have not been thru the pass yet to get out in the gulf.  You said there were 5' waves at the pass where it meets the gulf, is there always an area where its higher waves where the pass meets the gulf?  How long of an area is it?  I have an 23' c/c that I have taken just around the bay areas, but on this trip down I am going to go out into the gulf just with in a couple miles of land. Some of the tackle shops said to stay onthe east side of the pass and head the east when getting out into the gulf because of some obstacles in the water--any truth to this?

If there are any tips thatyou can give me about going thru the pass to the gulf I would greatly appreciated it!!

On the way out of the pass Saturday around 9:00ish it was a smooth ride all the way to where we were headed. Came back in around 3:pm and it was 5' slow rollers from #1 bouy to the mouth of the pass. Had to run really slow to keep those in front dry. Spent the next 2 hours drifting the outgoing pass and it was really a slow tide and smooth water. Did manage to catch a couple of flounder, 3 small sharks and the usual catfish.

If it is a ripping outgoing tide, the pass will be really bad.  But once you get outside of the pass, it will usually slick off.  That was the case yesterday.  We were headed in about  2pm yesterday and we had 1 foot seas all the way in till we got to the pass and it was a mess with 4 foot swells because of the tide.  It is always worth it to try and get outside the pass and take a look if you can do it safely and comfortably.  Many people simply turn around in the pass because they do not realize that it's not that bad outside the pass.

Departed NAS yesterday AM. Beautiful day ALL day long. Went out about to the 60 mile mark and was one step above slick. Return trip in @ 52 MPH...yup was with James (reel feisty). Water was dirty all over. Waiting for Scott to send pictures and will make post. All in all a very good day.

Only had my boat down there two other times and think that I have built up my courage to go out in the gulf.   I have  a 23' proline(older model) and have not had it in any kind of bad weather or waves yet.  I am just itching to get thru the pass.  When you guys talk about how the areas that are affected from the tides, how long is the affected water.  I mean are you in it for 5 mins. or 20 mins.?  I will only be going out on a good weather day and will stay with-in 2 miles of land.  Being a new guy out there I am just trying to figure out what I will run into before I actually do it. THANKS AGAIN

Catch the pass when the current isnt strong and it is usually ok.  How long you are in the pass depends on you.  It is about 1/2 mile or so of rough water when it is churned up tho.
