I just recently purchased an 84 Mako with a 96 Mercury 175 on it.  It is running fine but not sure how long ago the water pump was changed.  I am pretty mechanically inclined but have not done this before.  I hear its not that hard.  Going to get a mechanic to go through the whole thing when my budget allows but it looks really clean.  This is a 175 offshore v6 outboard.  Have any of you done this yourself and is it that hard.   I plan on going back out this weekend and was thinking of going ahead and changing it out.

2nd question I have is regarding gear lube for the lower end.  I hear quicksilver is good.  I bought some of the quicksilver premium and a pump to make it easier, but then I heard they make a synthetic blend.  Is the regular stuff good enough or do I need to go for the synthetic.  New to this, just looking for a bit of advice.  Thanks.

Dave
