| To make matters worse, Penn sold out to Shakespere. Now, not only will they be made overseas but the quality will most likely go down hill. HMHO

I hate that the penns aren't made in the US anymore also. I will say though that I bought one of the 750's 2 years ago and it's held up great. Now I don't catch anything other than bull reds and shark on it so I don't know how it would hold up catching larger fish. But for using it for what I do.......it works great and has held up with no problems. I want a larger reel but will be buying one of the older models just b/c I know the guts are better.

I have alot of penn reels and might not use them as much as others so maybe that is why they have been good for me. OR maybe it is because they get washed and dried after EVERY time they are used. They are also serviced every year depending on how much they were used that year, but every other year for sure. I do like the Shimano line also and I have some of those that get serviced the same. I think if you take care of what you have it will take care of you....

| I'm pretty sure they say "Made in China" right on the box. If you look hard enough, you can still find some of U.S. made 7500s, 8500s on shelves. I actually found a couple 7500s earlier this year at WalMart.

| I think the older penn Z series are about the best they made and the earlier ss series. But the newer reel all have better gear ratios and alot smoother drags.

Same applies to my diving gear, I don't call it a day until all my gear is cleaned and hung up to dry.

| Penn quality has benn on a downslide since the Henze family sold out a few years ago. Penn was always a family owned company, and they were dedicated to producing quality reels in the US at a good price. They finally had to give in to Chinese competition and were sold, and then sold again to the parent company that also owns shakespeare. The last spinning reels to be made in the US were the slammer and live liner, but now they're made in china too. The internationals and the torques are now the only models still made in the US.

| If you find any 70s and early 80s era Penns that have been taken care of buy them up. I have two 850ss, three 144Hs (6/0)s, and two 349H's and 2 349HC's that are still going strong. All of them were bought in the early 80s. The 349 high speeds were the best bottom fishing reels Penn ever made IMO. The new stuff is junk.

Sea-r-cy (11/18/2008) I've several old 750's, they were around before the 7500's. Sea-r-cyI did not know that........learn something every day. You can tell by the look of the reel too whether it's a new (made in china) or not. I too rinse every reel after every use. When I took the 750 in for service, they guy asked me if I ever used it.....lol. I used that thing twice a week every week.
