I have a ?? for the board... My girlfriend is getting her counters and floor tiled in Pcola.... The contractor keeps dropping hints about tipping....example... He said " My last client was so happy about my job peformance that he tipped me 30%... and I normally only get 15-20%" This struck me as unprofessional... I didn't say anything to him because I am not paying him... But my gf says he has dropped the tip word in 6-7 converstations... Here's my question... Do you tip general contractors ??? In my opinion it's No....  he is already making at least 30+ dollars an hour.. But I really don't know the etiquette when it comes to this type of work...  any help would be appreciated.... He is doing a good job, but the work is 3 days later then promised, and there is dust everywhere inside from him doing the bullnosing inside... Am I wrong in thinking it rude for anyone to drop multiple tip hints ?? Also do you tip for major housework such as tiling ?? Thanks !!

IMO, no. Especially if he's running behind and has made a mess. If they were to go above and beyond expectations, then it could be debatable.

Very unprofessional and hell no they make an hourly wage and if it isnt enough they will quit and go to another job.Ive been in constuction for 27 years and in that time Ive been offerd tips maybe 3 times and I would not except them. Granted most of my work is commercial and industrial and wouldnt get offerd tips any way.Is this guy working for himself or somebody else?

Thats crazy. Contactors dont get tips , they get referals.  With referals you can charge a little  extra because of peace of mind to the customer.                      Tell him if he does a good honest job you will definatley give a referal.

he wants a tip give him this one...Don't play with fire!!! I was a contractor for a  lot of years and we never brought it up and never expected one. If and when we got one it was 20 to 30 bucks, enough to buy the crew, 2 or 3 guys, lunch. I'll bet $10 bucks that guy is from up north, sorry to any of our northern friends on the forum.

no way. i might be young but all my jobs have consisted with public service. first restaurant(they get tips) then a/c work, then utilities, now fire service.  u get paid by your employer for what u do and how you do it.  if someone offers tips it looks better to turn them down.  but for someone to ask for a tip, my response is simply,

surely this is not the company owner? i can see some lame brain employee of the gc doing such, and would probably get fired over implying he should be tipped. if it is the owner, i do believe we should know who this is.

That's funny. You said General Contractor and then you said he was making $30/hr laying tile. Well, which is it? No GC I know is laying tile and surely they're not getting or expecting tips. I've had customers tip our employees for going above and beyond, but its not expected.

I'm sure glad some contractors chined in and said NO. Never heard of tipping a contractor. Maybe a little IF they came in ahead of schedule and under the estimate and did a really bang up job. Doesn't sound like that's the case.

Josey,

Why would you think the guy is form up North?  I come from the North East and would never ask for a tip.  I worked geneal contracting in Maine for a while and never asked for a tip...I did good work and took pride in my work.  You get more in return for doing a good job and word of mouth, that is much more of a tip than anything you can get in monetary funds.

I'm not trying to stir the pot here, just letting my feelings be heard.  There seems to be some finger pointing between the way things are done "up north" and down this way.

Either way, I would not tip the guy, especially if he is making a mess in the home and behind the scheduled timeframe.

Good luck and I hope that you are happy with the final results of the tile job.

Never heard of the contractor getting tipped. Now on plenty of our jobs that are residential, we have had the customer buy the CREW pizza and drinks, BBQ, and sometimes a lil apprreciation cash. But the cash tip is rare, not to be expected, and not the contractor. Lunch for a HARD WORKING POLITE crew is a nice thing!

I'm from up north too, w/many years contracting. I never heard of asking for a tip until I moved south (this is now the second instance). Let's not paint with broad brushes guys! I always (without asking) will offer sodas, coffee, samiches, beer, etc. for quality work. For substandard work (mess left behind, etc) not only is there no tip, there is no final payment until work is complete in an acceptable manner! This guy sounds like a

Just my $.02 worth, but then again I'm from up north (WTF?)!

No way would I tip him. If he worked for me and I found out, I would fire him and besides that, he sounds like the type that would be in your refrigerator drinking your cold drinks and in your cabinets dipping his finger in your peanut butter when you are not around.

Coming in under budget and ahead of schedule gets us paid performance bonuses. They're clearly enumerated in the contracts and agreed to in advance. That money isn't a tip. It's earned. Any contractor asking for tips ought to be fired. You should at least name them.

Thanks for everyone's replys... i will be showing the gf this topic and replys... .... I will give a little more background on this then I did before... The tile was purchased from a pcola store.. I'm not 100% sure if the contractor works for the store or just sub-contracts... My understanding is he sub-contracts through the store.... I don't know what the floor work cost... The kitchen counter-top and tile backsplash labor bill was aprox 1100-1200... He has worked 25-30 hours already and only has 1 more day left... The work is excellent... No problems there.... Just the fact he keeps dropping the tip word into conversations... He never comes out and says I work for tips... he just makes statements all the time about How this customer tipped this or I made this much last yr in tips ?? plus he did the bullnosing inside and she spent 8 hours today cleaning the cabinets... Also He seems to be a nice guy.... not rude or anything... Just keeps bringing up the tip word all the time..  should we bring this up to the tile store ???? or to him ?? My opinion is just say something to him about it ... Thoughts?

Whipper Snapper,

I'm wasn't saying I was a Yankee.  I'm a RED SOX fan.  We all started out in the North East for the most part anyway, then some headed south after finding out how hard you had to work up there...just kidding...right?

Don't get all wound up, pretty much everyone I know will fight to the death to defend thier background, or climb the local water tower to defend their sisters honor.

No, you're not wrong.  It's not just rude, it's freaking unprofessional.

I'm scratching my head at an hourly rate for installing tile.  Is this guy a "handiman" type?  Tile work is usually bid/paid by the square foot.  I worked in a number of trades while in college, and have worked with numberous contractors in the building of half a dozen homes for my own family.  I've bought a lot of beer and pizza, and I've even taken a couple crews out to lunch, but the thought of tipping in this situation is absurd.

He should not be expecting and certainly not hinting about tips.  I know that in the flooring business a lot of times a sales person goes out and sells the job then the installer goes out to do the work.  Sometimes the sales person gets it wrong on the labor involved or just plain low balls the work to get a sale leaving the installer over the barrel.  Even if he was loosing his butt due to that situation its not your problem.  He should be taking it up with his employer or the sales person.

Just on principal alone I would not give a person who talks about a tip one, unless I was the one bringing it up.  I sometimes have people ask me if I should be tipped because I am in the service business and I tell them no because my quote to do the work is my pay.  I then tell them that it would be appreciated if they would tell others about our company because referrals keep us in business and to remember us for the next time they need work.

It would be a good idea to call the store where you got the tile just to find out how the installers are paid, just for your knowledge.  I wouldn't let them know who you are until after the job is done though because if he gets his butt chewed or fired your tile job may suffer.  If they press you I would tell them you will call back after the job is complete to avoid repercussions.  They should understand.  You may find out this guy is a problem for others too.

Jeff

Absolutely not...tips are part of a waitdresses pay. This person is already getting his wages..I wouldn't let him know though.I'd play along with him so he does a good job. My friend, I'm also from th enortheast...we are known to be cold and independent..LOL We would never ask for a tip..We know the answr would be a laugh in the face. Tips are earned anyway..you don't ask for them. EXTREMELY RUDE.
