How's the kayaking in the winter months around here?  I'm debating whether to get a yak now or wait until it gets warmer.  Or would I be fine provided I wear the right gear?  Any advice would be appreciated.  Thanks.

I've got my wetsuit , so hopefully I'll be out there.

I want to chase the stripes in blackwater and go after specs and reds in the bay .

there will be blues , reds, and bo's in the surf but I don't think I'm ready for that yet .

Wool cap on head. Light jacket and resign yourself to being cold from the waist down and your good to go. Winter has some of the most pleasant paddleing once that sun gets up there a bit.
We are lucky-- what we call winter is like spring to most of the people who paddle and fish.

That settled it for me.  Guess I was already twisting my own arm enough.  Just needed that little extra bit from y'all.  ha.  Thanks for the replies!  I've been wanting a Malibu Mini-X for a few months now... and as of 1/2 an hour ago... I have one.

If you're in the O.B. area you'll probably see me out there chasing reds and bobos. Just make sure you dress appropriately.

Always keep your eyes open for some closeout sales on stuff down here. For example, last year I bought a set of polyester long johns at Bass Pro for 50% off. They are warm, wick away moisture quickly, and are very light weight. Coming from up North, I am a firm believer in layering for cold weather rather than wearing the heaviest thickest parka you can find. Last winter I went out many times and wore my skivvies, this set of poly longhandles, a sweat suit, and light jacket and the only area that stayed cold were my feet and they are cold all year long anyway!! I always have a set of Frogg Toggs with me in case of a sudden shower and, if needed, I can slip them on to break any wind that kicks up.

Winter is a good time to check out the surf and near shore fishing from your kayak as the winds are out of the North more often and that helps to lay down any breakers that would drench you going out or coming in. I have gone out in January and February and it was like launching on a huge lake!! No breakers and I stayed dry and warm all day long!

Good luck and keep us posted on your catches.

Looks like you didn't need too much convincing. There's tons of reds to be caught. Be careful not to flip in this cold water though. Don't forget to post reports!
The best cold weather kayaking investment I have made so far was waterproof socks (thanks Tex). They are about $30 at basspro. I wear a normal pair of socks then the waterproof ones, and then shoes. My feet are nice and warm, and also dry!
Here's a link for those socks:

Yeah, didn't need too much convincing at all.  Just needed to get a little more pumped up about it before I spent the money.  ha.  Thanks a lot for the info!  I don't know how, but I forgot about Bass Pro...   Blasphemy, I know.  I'll say 3 Hail Redfishes and swear off of Land Shark until noon.  I'll definitely be hitting them up today and checking out the stuff you guys recommended.  Thanks again!

So have you taken it in the water yet? I went fishing in my revo less than an hour after I got it.

Some links you might want to check out are

Hey yakflies, your links don't seem to be working.

Here's a direct link to the 321 site.

And here's the link to the GCKFA site.

Sealskinz are great socks for wintertime use. I wear them in a similar fashion but I slip on a pair of river shoes over everything else.

BTW, who won the Revo in the drawing on that last 321 tournament you and Tex cleaned house on???

I haven't taken it out yet.  Work and the weather had different plans for me.  If the wind stays down, I'm going to try to take it out today.  Definitely itching to take it!  It's just sitting in the garage, taunting me every time I see it... "Don't you love me?  You never take me out."  "Darlin, we've only been together for a couple days."  Wait... we still talking about kayaks?  ha.  I'm kind of taking my time with it though to make sure I have all the right gear so I can enjoy the time out rather than being miserable and wishing I had brought/wore something.  And thanks to y'alls recommendations... I think I'm good to go.

I did pick up some Sealskins, Framerguy... and half of the store apparently.  I was going to put some cheapy wally world water shoes that I use for wading over them and see how that works.  Just a little something for the soles of the feet.

Thanks for the links.  Looks like fun.  I'm going to sign up today.

Itching to go, wishing i was there!!!

FramerGuy...No his name was Chappy (UpTheHill)

Those shoes should work fine...however I think an old pair of shoes will work better than the water shoes. Those socks don't block the wind (at least not for me), that's why I wear the shoes. Those water shoes might be too ventilated.

Shoes it is then.  Definitely appreciate advice from those with experience as I don't particularly care to find out the hard way.  haha.  Still didn't make it out today.  Looked like a nice day.  Against my better judgment, I decided to be responsible and take care of some things at the house.  Smells good in here now though.

321fish.com looks like a lot of fun.  I'm going to have to scope out some spots and get in the game!

You could also try a pair of diving shoes.... they work well also. Normally... I wear sweats out fishing in the winter.... and bring a towel should my ankles get cold.

321fish is a lot of fun......it gives me more modivation to go and fish (not that I really need it).
I'm still learning better ways to dress in the kayak still. I haven't been cold while I've been out fishing on my kayak yet. One morning when Texas and I launched his truck said 21 degrees. My #1 goal when I'm on my kayak is to stay dry and warm. I hate to be cold.

I did look at some diving shoes briefly...  But ran away.  My hands were already full of stuff.  ha.  I noticed that it's kinda hard to not get carried away.  I didn't learn my lesson with my canoe.  I'm guessing the sweats work out ok?

21 degrees?  You're talking celsius right?  That's either 1. Dedication or 2. Still being drunk from the night before.  ha.  Hell, maybe even a little of both.  Not that it's a bad thing.

There's a guy @ the GB Flea Market selling the all rubber military rain gear for 15$ I believe....They are 2 piece suits suspendered pants & a

hooded zip-up top. They aren't new, but new to me. They have a few rust stains on the leg, but they keep me dry & when combined with

marmot top & bottoms...nice & warm just met it's roomate.
