I've been debating for a few days if i wanted to post this or not since its actually kinda trivial, but I guess I will.  Last weekend i was killing time in OB and stopped in at J&M to see if there was anything i couldnt live without.  Well besides their prices being out of sight, one employee was rather rude and actually bird dogged me around the whole store as if i was trying to steal something.  and no he wasn't trying to be helpful or provide any type of customer service, just keeping an eye on me.  Hell he was actually standing outside the bathroom door when i walked out of it.  I won't be back in there even though I have bought stuff from there in the past.  I'll stick to Top Gun in orange beach or Outcast.  I actually stopped in Top Gun the same day as J&M and bought a few things and was more than pleased with the service which was great, as it always is.

You must have looked funny because I'm over there all the time and always get great treatment. In fact, i couldn't think of the slightest thing to be critical of. They've got the only good selection of offshore gear in the area and they keep it updated all the time. The catalog sales are 1 day away with no sales tax.

Josh did you happen to catch a name of the employee? I know the owner well and he runs a great business and always is on top of his employees to provide the best possible customer service. I know he wouldnt be happy to see this message. They are the best Blue Water store around...

I agree Hal that they have the best local blue water assortment, and I guess the beard makes me look like a criminal...regardless I wasn't pleased with my last visit.

biggamefishr this is a common complaint of J&M tackle. i will not go back in that store and give them any business. i used to go in there in the mid 90's and they were rude then so i stopped going in. when i moved back to gulf shores in 2007 i figured i would give them another shot. got the same rude treatment, pretty similar to what you got. if you are a charter boat captain or dump a ton of money to them i am sure they are real nice to you. but they just dont give a darn about average local fisherman coming in there. tuna man had a thread on here a while back where the same thing happened to him when he went to j&m. use sams or top gun for the offshore equipment and Mo Fishin is great for inshore fishing.

I have seen several of these threads complaining about customer service in tackle shops. While I agree with the fella about being "eye balled" like some thug, what exactly are you guys expecting?......just curious.

Although it is posts like this one that help the overall climate of business, I have worked in retail for a long time and I prefer a different approach.  I've never intended to offend a customer.  But it happens from time to time...sometimes it is just unavoidable.  But I want to know about it, person to person.  I'd much rather be given the chance to extend the olive branch than have someone stew over something and blast me in public.

I'm not criticizing your choice to post this, you are certainly entitled to do so and I respect your point of view.  I know most of the guys and gals at J & M.  I can't imagine one of them intentionally lying in wait for you outside the rest room.  But I can't say for sure since I wasn't there.

I guess my point is that when dealing with someone from whom you expect good service, please give them the benefit of the doubt that they may be having one bad day in the midst of several good ones.  If they offend, tell them.  If they don't make amends, go to the boss.  If that fails, then blast away.  And if it happens twice, well, let both barrels go.

On a different note, I would like to let all Forum members know that I work at Sam's in Orange Beach, and we are working diligently to enhance our offshore tackle selection.  We are very proud to be carrying a wide selection of Marlin Magic Lures, made by Gary Eoff of Kona, Hawaii.  He makes the famous Ahi P and the Ruckus, both incredibly productive lures, and we have a bunch more different designs, with more to come.  Furthermore, we know that it is the little, hard-to-find accessories that keep you coming back, and we're trying to get it all here before next spring.  Hopefully the water won't be down at the Yucatan this season.

Merry Christmas, ya'll...
