Left Sherman Cove Tuesday, 30 Dec at sun rise to beautiful seas and a "nice" nip in the air.  Capt Ed, Jay, Archie, and I made up the crew.

Never saw the pass so smooth, and it was a quick ride out to the edge.  A few boats going out with us and about ten on the edge when we arrived.  No need to anchor, just drifted over a few holes.  Bite was rather slow at times, but we were pulling in Red Grouper, Blue Nose, Scamp, Mingo, and assorted others:

Jay with the first Trigger brought aboard:

Of course, Big Red Snapper were abundant (a few 28-30", 25-30 lbs):

Archie caught a few Speckled Hind, but couldn't figure out the size limit, so sent both back down:

Archie also caught this colorful fish.  Capt Ed called it a "Wasi" or somthing like that, but he has a tendency to talk in tongues!

Ed helped fill up the box with a nice Almaco and AJ:

Bite stopped about 1100, no current, but picked up about noon.  We were using cut bait, squid, pin fish, and cigs.  Jay had the last big hookup of the day:

After fighting "it" for awhile (I swear we saw a coral reef jump twice!), and came up empty, we headed in.  Came across this about 23 miles out:

"PELIG-- KEMAS--".  Any input?

Fish cleaned and everyone with a nice bag of filets, off we went in a beautiful sunset!

Although we didn't "kill them", it was a beautiful day spent with good friends, lots of laughs, on the seas and a great way to end 2008.

Here's to 2009 and the hopes we are allowed to catch and keep a few in the new season!

GOD BLESS AMERICA

I believe that is an "adolescent" hogfish, somewhere between adult and juvenile.
We fished the Ozark and Mingo Ridge yesterday, managed a few AJs, scamp and of course endangered red snapper. Four seven foot sharks back to back though had us calling it a day.
That sunset was absolutely unreal on the way in!

Cuban Hogfish. I was catching those again yesterday while trying to jig up bait.

Capt Ed and crew, it was a pleasure to meet you and see the great mess o fish you had at Sherman Cove. I sure would like to take you up on the offer to follow you to the Edge.

Right now I am shaking down my rookie crew!!!! Zachary, my 1st Mate, turns 9 in March loves to fish but doesn't care for the long boat ride, and my 2nd Mate (7yrs old) is powering through seasickness. We made it to the Russian Frieghter and they caught a bunch of Snapper.

That's a nice trigger you guys pulled up.

Those hognose snapper are excellent tablefare when they are bigger.  I got into some down in the Keys some time back.  Virtually no bloodline on the filets.
