i have fished pensacola for half my life . it is a known fact that in the winter the bay will hold smoker kings . when the bridge was in bussiness every day you could see the guys with the trolly rig live baits out there and i imagin they would not have been there every day if some one was not catching something. .... so the question , why is it that when the water cools off the kings clear out along with most of the other palagics in the gulf , and for some reason a group of large kings decide not to go . ..? why do they not eat or go in the gulf in the winter , but the bay is ok ? why do the schoolies not move into the bay with them ? and why would the spanish not hang in the bay as well ? do they have like a lotto ? is it that only the snow bird kings from up north down for the winter and all the florida kings too whinne to handle the cold ? ... is there just no bait for the schools to work on .. so only the old retired kings with a fixed income able to manage the slim winters ... it just seems like it should be all or nothing , the gulf is useally warmer than the bay ... so its all just so vexing .

i have never heard there were kings ever after Christmas. Bay kings seem to leave the Bay when the water temperature falls below 65. Ideally they like 72. They come in the Bay to ambush the schools of menhaden coming out of the bayous and going offshore. I do not remember ever hearing of kings after Christmas! Anyone agree?

So where is this fact known at?I have been fishing for kings since I was 12...many, many moons ago.Kings do NOT stay in the bay in the winter.Those you saw trolling were either fishing for things like sharks, redfish and large bluefish...or also ignorant of the kings leaving the bay.
Life is too short to skip fishing.

I do not remember ever hearing of kings after Christmas! Anyone agree?We got into the Kings Dec 30th this year, they were snakes, but we were also offshore in 68.5 degree water. I wouldn't believe Kings to be in the Bay during the cold winter, but stranger things have happened I'm sure.?. Not to sound mean or nothing, but I'd have to see video or pics of that, lol.

Depends on what you are calling winter If your saying when winter starts on Dec21 then you are Right never heard of any but If you are just talking about when It starts getting cold around The end of Oct and Into late Nov Then yes they can still be caught, have caught many My biggest was around 60lbs many years ago Missed a Nice one this year in front of palafox pier in the middle on Nov, Just my 2 cents worth hope this may have helped you Dwayne and yes I know before Dec21 Is Called Fall but some people say once summer leaves they call it winter!!
