OK gents (and ladys...sorry) I am trying to update my Garmin 178C. On Garmin's web site they talk about the Marine Updater and using a Garmin USB card reader. Reading the instructions it sounds like you have to purchase a Garmin unique USB card to install any updates from their web site. On a Garmin Nuvi GPS unit I own I was able to connect the unit via a USB cord to my computer and download the updates direct from the web site. I already have a bluechart card for the area so all I'm interested in is any updates for the GPS unit itself. I may be reading this all wrong and be off base. Can someone that has updated their Garmin unit please point me in the right direction. Thanks.

Call Jerry at Georges Marine Electronics or stop by if you are in Pensacola. They do sales and repairs, so they do the updates too.

i use a blank sd card to download the update from the computer and then put it in the chartplotter to install it. go to Support on the main page and click on Updates & Downloads. once there click on unit software. when the next page loads, look over to the right side of the page and click on show all downloads and updates. the next page will have a list of all garmin equipment and the latest update for each one. find the 178c in the list and click on it. it will give you directions from there on downloading to the sd card. once you have it on the sd card just put the card in your chartplotter and turn it on. it should automatically install the update.

On my garmin 276 C the card is for charts only and doesn't even have to be in the machine to update the unit software. Just connect the unit to the usb port and download the correct software for your unit from gamins web sight and install it. Make sure you save any way points and routs because some updates erase them.

Thanks for the feedback. The use of SD card is the way I will need to go. The unit I have does not have a port for a USB connection.

SHatten,

I think I have one of the cables Bama is talking about.  I'll need to check it but again I'm pretty sure I have the right one.  Shoot me a pm if you would like to borrow it (I'm in Gulf Breeze).

Either take it to Georges (as mentioned above) or buy cables.

You'll need the cable to connect it to your computer. It is available from Garmin.
