I have a Penn 550ssg and last week while fishing I noticed that when I would cast and try and retrieve the bail would not flip over when I turned the handle. I really dont feel like taking it to get looked at because im sure someone on here can give me some quick fix advice.

I had a shimano reel do that to me and I just cleaned up the bail.....a little reel lube and it was good to go.

If your bail spring isn't broken then just alittle lube under the bail where the spring and screw are will solve that problem ( slight corrosion )

| when speaking of 'lube', for this reel part, i strongly urge you to use a thin product--like a spray, WD40 or corrosion block or the like. an oil may collect dust or sand and actually enhance the problem. and the aerosol spray may dislodge any debris. just try to protect the line from any overspray. cheers. drew

So I just got done taking my bail apart and I figured the problem out. Becuase the reel is graphite the side where the line roller is has a small lever like mechanism that broke for some reason I have only been using this reel for about 3 months and always rinse and clean/lube the reel after every use so I know there is no rust or sand in it. Do you guys think if I take it back I can get a new one I return?

Your biggest mistake was buying the ssg. They are nice and light but won't hold up to catching fish with regularity. Try to take it back and get a real reel.

Try to take it back and get a real reel.I am finding this out the hard way I guess....right now im looking into buying a penn 704z and now since this one went out on me maybe another shimano stradic

| My 550 ssg that I had did the same exact thing after about 6 months of use. The trip lever thingamabob broke. It's sitting in a closet since it was replaced with a Shimano reel on the rod. I never had any sand in it. Lubed it and cleaned it properly. It just plain broke. If you go to this link: http://www.fishermansheadquarters.com/PDF/550SSg_v7.pdf You will find where parts 27 and 28 are. The platic piece that held those peices broke on me. It had a small crack in the platic piece which did not allow the trip lever to operate properly.

| I suggest you look where each Penn is currently made, a ton of the new ones are made in China. I guarentee you will not find one from China that holds up as well as one from Japan. There are some real good Shimanos and Daiwas as well.

I never had any sand in it. Lubed it and cleaned it properly. It just plain broke. The problem is that the graphite reels that took over for a while flex too much under pressure. That is why there are only a few still made. They sell them on the premise that you can fish all day because they are soo light. What they don't tell you is don't catch any fish because the can't handle that.

| Get a shimano spheros. For the money they are IMO the best spinning reel you can get.

You hit the nail on the head that is exactly the piece that broke on mine...such crap too becuase I fished shimano all the time in Hawaii and never had one issue. Came to Florida hearing great things about penn but this is my first penn reel and I am not imprerssed by the crafstmanship hence the reason im looking into to older more durable penn 704z/706z.

Yep I got a Daiwa on my surf rod and I havent had one issue with it they make some good stuff and Shimano as well I should have stuck with my gut feeling about going with a penn ssg

| Yeah its funny how the mood has shifted towards Penn. I'll still use 4/0-9/0 on the beach for sharks or 9/0s for wire line trolling but thats about it.

| I normally trip the bail back by hand rather than turning the handle. I read where you get less line twist that way especially with braid. Any opinions?

| Yes, Penn is in a shambles. Many if not most of their reels are now made in China, which in and of itself is not a bad thing, but the modifications that have been made in the shift to the overseas factory leave something to be desired. It is all a result of the company changing hands about three times in the last five years. Parts are rather difficult to obtain at present, which doesn't help their saleability. About the only thing keeping Penn afloat is the Senator series, but even that market is slowly being overtaken by Shimano as have most others. My suggestion regarding your 550SSG is to return it to the retailer and politely express your dissatisfaction and ask to trade for a more desireable reel, such as a Shimano. Even Penns carry a one-year warranty these days. I hate it, but Penn just isn't what it used to be, and I concur with Chris, the Shimano Spheros is a great no-frills, yet durable, mid-priced Shimano reel. Good luck.

I will definitley look into a Shimano Spheros.....has anyone ever heard of or used a Daiwa DF100A ? if so what are your thoughts?
