OK folks, I need a little help. I have a 140HP Johnson outboard on my Bass boat (16’) . It is an older Johnson (about a 92 I think) . The trouble is that when I take off and start to get the boat on top of the water the prop disengages and the motor revs up. As soon as I put it in neutral, and give it gas again, it re-engages. As long as I run it at lower speeds, it works fine.
I’m wondering if it has a clutch and if so, could it need to be adjusted? Any ideas about what could cause this would help.
Thanks in advance!
Thanks!

Need to check your prop hub... it may be spun. It could be an adjustment also. I would first check the hub. Also, check your lower unit oil for metal. If you have chunks of metal, your clutch teeth could be worn/rounded off causing the unit to disengage, however, usually it tries to slam back in gear when that is the case.

I pm'd you with a list of urologists. That's pretty brave posting about your Johnson problems.

OK, I pulled the prop, and it looks fine. no signs of ware at all. Double "D" mentioned something about an adjustment. Can you elaborate on that? Any other thoughts?
Thanks!

You have to look closely at the rubber hub for ANY rubber that seems torn, bubbled, ripped, etc. If you see anything that looks like that, your hub is more than likely spun. The adjustment is for the shift linkage. It may not be adjusted so that the engagement point for forward and reverse are the same. If the cable is worn too much, there will be too much play. Check to be sure the linkage is staight up when in neutral when shifted from both directions. If it is too far in reverse, there will not bee enough engagement into forward and it could jump gear. However, usually when that occurs, the gear will try to jump back in gear and you will hear it. Unless the cable is that work or the control box is worn/loose. Hope this helps.

I did notice that the Rubber behind the Prop had thin pieces of rubber torn of of it. Is that what your talking about? I also found fishing line wrapped around the Shaft behind the prop. Could that have caused it to act up? I was looking at the splines for signs of ware. Thanks again!
Thanks!

Get your prop rehubbed. I recommend Accu-prop. They are by Bahia Mar where Pace crosses Barancas by the Oar House. Pull the fishing line and see if it has gone into the seal. If it has, the seal may or may not be damaged. To be sure, a pressure check would leed to be performed. If you want to take your chances, then keep checking your gearlube for water and for signs of oil leaking out of the prop shaft seal. No, the fishing line is not the cause of the prop hub to spin.

sounds like a hub to me too but if you want to be 100% sure i believe you can put a line across the rubber and onto the prop, go out and run it to where it revs up and see if the lines are still lined up once back home...just another option but sounds like a pretty accurate diagnosis already thanks Jason
