Why would he change a fuel filter in the middle of a large empty parking lot?

theres a bunch of whys... why was he working on it in the parking lot, why did'nt he have a fire extinguisher onboard when he is suppose to... He ran to get one, but was able to undo the truck from the trailer before hand??

That is good way to get out of those payments, can not sell it, have it repoed - bad credit. Put it in a large parking lot, away from my house, should it burn my property will not be damaged. I thought the same as many did.

Let me tell you what is so stupid about this....The boat is in a parking lot, his truck is not hooked up to the trailer (WHY), no fire extinguisher.....Send up the RED flags. Now had it been in his yard and caught fire while working on it I doubt any flags would pop up. Insurance companies pay for stupidity but not arson , so I'm sure a investigation will be in the works, and I'd bet it is covered beyond the value.

Who said it was the owner that was working on it? Could have been a mechanic doing a service in the parking lot becuase the boat is stored on a lift. Changed the filter, spilled fuel did a bone head move of not cleaning up and turned the key to the on postion. As the Navy old safety bullitens said WOOF end of story. Didn't know where the fire extingusher was.

I agree this senerio could have happened. I have one problem with it. Why was the key turned to start the engine while it was out of the water. There is no water supply there by hose.

Turn the key on to turn on the fuel pump to leak check the fuel filter. No need to start the engine.

Given the circumstances it is very likely that this fire was caused by friction.

This is a common phenomenon in these difficult economic times and often happens when insurance policies are allowed to rub repeatedly against mortgages, car payments and boat payments.

Well, I think if I owned a 30'-40' Fountain Powerboat, I would have some type of fire suppression onboard.:d

Having retired from the Fire Service in California after 29 years, I am cynical about fire causes. My classifications of fire cause are: 1- stupidity, 2-set for insurance or spite, 3-accidental,(very few) lightening strikes occasionally.

Without casting any accusations, in 1972, (first oil embargo and gas prices soared), we had more big RV, motor home fires in one year than we had in twenty years. HMMM? Imagine that

I don't have a dog in the fight, so 'nuff said.

Whatever the cause of the fire, and if in fact was an accident, I surely hope he's not in a position of money problems. That will draw new light on the situation.
