| No looting or thievery that I heard about here on Bayou Chico. We have had few problems as my reputation has spread - Born and raised in Tupelo, MS, Former Marine, 30 year retired fireman who survived the Watts Riots *, gun collector, mean old sob who would just as soon shoot you, (double tap) as look at you. Protect our Second Amendment Rights!!!!! * I am still waiting for a chance to get even with the MF's who were shooting at me while I was up 65' on a ladder pipe trying to put out a fire they started. I was lucky and never saw combat while a Marine, just when I was a fireman. I will never forget small arms rounds whizzing by me. Three firemen died in the 1965 Watts Riots and it was silenced. ENUFF!!! Tom

There was a lot of looting going on after Ivan, hopefully no one on this forum fell victim to looting, but it was a problem for the first week or so after the storm. Nothing like New Orleans, but pretty bad for this area during the first week afterwards.

A group of us stayed in Milton at the Moore's. It's honestly the first time I have been in a home with a concrete foundation where I felt the whole place shake. Kinda scary stuff. Anyway, we eventually left and headed towards town but had to travel North from Milton, then West, then South back down into Pensacola because of all the tornado damage all over Milton area. We made it to my then office (down from my current location) on Navy Blvd, and my computer guy volunteered to stay in my office because the front floor to ceiling windows were destroyed. Thank God he did, because he claimed that he ran off at least four groups that were running up and down the road going through damaged buildings (we left him heavily armed when dropping him off). We eventually made it to Gulf Beach highway about 2 miles before reaching the bridge and so goes the rest of the story......

| Two black guys shined a q-beam in our house the night after the storm, but the sound of a shotgun slide racking moved them along pretty quickly. They were pushing a shopping cart, but didn't have much in it yet. Always stay locked and loaded after a big storm.

| Another question...When the governor, mayor, chief of police or who ever says "mandatory evacuation"...does that mean they can physically remove you from your home or do you have the right to stay no matter what?

saltfisher1 (6/28/2009) Another question...When the governor, mayor, chief of police or who ever says "mandatory evacuation"...does that mean they can physically remove you from your home or do you have the right to stay no matter what? They can never force you to leave. About the only place that they put under a mandatory evac is the beach usually. And you are plain dumb to stay there in anything over a TS.

There were SO many Sheriff's Deputies in Navy Point after Ivan , I didn't hear about any looting ... we would ride bicycles around to other friends houses at night and were repeatedly stopped by the Deputies , felt good and safe

| I believe their was somebody shot and killed in the south side of Seaglades (a neighborhood west of NAS on the water) after Ivan. As I heard it the guy who was shot was high and or drunk and ignored verbal warnings from the homeowner. Jim

martial law is when the military takes over law enforcement in a community. It hasn't happened here. There is usually a curfew after a storm, which is enforceable by law via county ordinance. Its a misdermeanor. Discretion is used to enforce it though.

| My boat was in the barn at bahia mar.. needless to say it was a cluster... it was at least a week if not 2 before the folks there made any attempt to discourage people from stealing, once my boat was "salvaged" i was missing a cooler, buch of dock lines and the anchor ball ring setup i had bought from sea lark, (they left the ball).. rich

| I stayed in Poly Isles on a canal during Ivan and it was pretty much a goast town the following morning....my home was trashed and luckily I was able to rent an apartment in GB proper for 6 months while my home was reparied. The National Guard enforced curfews in my neighborhood and in GB proper. The apartment I got was off of Shoreline Dr. and when you made the turn off 98 to get on Shoreline there was a roadblock and you had to show ID to get thru.....Things were pretty tight, security wise, for the first few weeks.

| I stayed at the Civic Center for Ivan. BIG mistake, especially when the roof a/c's blew off and the basement flooded. At 8:00 AM I left. Had to sign a release though because winds were still over 50 mph. Walked through downtown and down Navy Blvd to our plant to get my car and to relay plant condition to our home office in Salt lake City. Saw a couple of Guys looting the Circle K on Garden towards downtown but nothing else. Got stopped a couple of times by Police, but just asking me if I was OK and if I needed a ride. Biggest things I gained as a result... Cash is king. No power, no atm's. Gas and a generator to run the room a/c and keep food cold. I had gas range so was able to cook and the neighbor Ladies would use my stove to cook their food and leave me a plate behind. Sorry that had to end.. MRE's aren't really that bad once you get used to them. And lastly, People really show their goodness and compassion after going through something like that. Our neighborhood would get together at someone's driveway, cook a bunch of food and help each other out. Out of electricity for 2 1/2 weeks and truthfully, hated to see power back on because people went back to their separate ways.
