do not spend much, they don't last long. you can probably find a combo deal at a big-box store. i purchased my stuff at outlaws. if you want the good stuff get ready for about 600.00-800.00 for a basic system (stereo-remote head-set of multi range speakers) or find a cheap system for 200.00

If you're going higher end, JL audio has excellent marine speakers, but they're not cheap. Longest lasting, best sounding marine speaker I've dealt with.

I bought Poly-Planar from StarMarineDepot.com.  They have some really good prices on whatever you decide to get.  I did not have space for an amp, so I still may not be satisfied.  I bought the under gunwhale mount speakers and the MA7500 series for overhead.

This is what we're looking at getting - Clarion CMD4A or CMD5 from Crutchfield.

We had a Rockford Fosgate in our other boat - forgot the model - left it in the boat when it sold.  :-) It was a good radio.

We had 4 West Marine brand speakers.. 2 big oval ones & 2 smaller ones (can't remember the specs). They sounded GOOD, but I guess we play our tunes too loud and one busted & started rattling. :P They were "ok" but I don't want them again. :-)

My parents-in-law have one of those cheaper packages from Bass Pro. I think it's JBL. You'd think you were getting what you pay for - BUT, it's actually nice & has good sound (& it is all they need).

I think we'll go with external speakers this time b/c we have the perfect spot to mount them on the ttop without cutting holes again..

Use a 50$ boom box. Installed radios usually don't last very long!

I bought a sony last year and enjoy it. Whatever brand you decide on, search the product on EBAY before you buy. I saved a lot of money (around $200) on mine through Ebay. Did the same thing with my GPS, saved about $400 dollars. I would recommend getting one that reads MP3 files. That way you can load up one CD with 200 songs instead of switching CD's that hold 15 songs.

Good luck!

Yeah, & maybe get one with an Ipod connection if you have an ipod or zune or whatever else. :-)

i just got a good deal on a CMD5 and two sets of CMCX7.1 coax speakers on ebay - $260 shipped...   the clarion stuff has really good reviews, especially this receiver, and the speakers "appear" to be pretty good quality.  i'll let you know after i get everything installed.

Get a good receiver with waterproof remote. Get a xplod 1200w amp and use the poly planar platinum series 8 inch round speakers and you will be amazed!
The above is ONLY if you love music and quality sound.

I bought a Dual system from Bass Pro - it was priced at $179.  But check this out, they had the exact system listed on their web site for $129.  I brought in the web page and BP matched their web site price.  I was happy since it was AM/FM/CD/MP3/WMA/etc compatible with an iPod adapter.

One other money saver.  For the radio antenna, I paid $6 for a 20 inch antenna wire which works super.  I was going to get a VHF antenna piggy back adapter but came across the wire antenna - for $6, I thought what the hell...

Good luck

I have four of those speakers on my boat along with 2 BOSE Bracket mounted speakers in the cockpit....

Those JL audio speakers crank........You will need an amp for them.... They run $300.00 plus a pair

I have a good setup and has been working for 3 years great! The system is in the background. I have pioneer speakers with the poly CD player, it all comes with a warrenty. Spend a little extra cash and you with be glad!

I got the Clarion stuff installed over the weekend and OMG!!!! IT SOUNDS INCREDIBLE!!!

It sounds like it has more power than the 200W aftermarket system in our Land Cruiser.

I put two of the 7-inch speakers next to the storage box on the center console facing the stern and the other two are on the front of the center console facing the bow.  It's essentially using the center console as a huge box.  The sound is INCREDIBLE.  Plenty of power, and the reception - without an antenna - is fine.  CD's sound very good.  Needless to say, for $260 shipped and not having to use an amp, we're very happy.
