you need to figure out what you're wanting to target primarily before you decide what weight rod to get....

Sounds like you would probably need a "salt6" or a seven weight. I personnaly use a 5wt for fresh and a 9wt for salt. There are companies that now make a slightly beefy 6wt that many are calling a "salt 6wt" It will be a little heavy for your typical 1-3lb bass, but a 10+lb redfish could wreck a 5wt in a hurry. What kind of price range are you talking. Keep in mind that you are going to have $50+ in just line. Also, reels that aare salt safe are going to atart in the $100-$125 range and go to more than you can imagine.

| You should have taken him to the Fly Fishers of Northwest Florida's thing down on 17th today. They supposedly had a bunch of different combos to look at and cast. I'm surprised no one posted anything about it before now. I would have, but I'm not part of their club, so it's not my place. I've met a few of them and they all seem pretty nice.
... seemed like a good idea at the time... p.s. - If it smells like fish, eat it!

| I have an okuma and it is a great salt setup for a reasonable price. I think my reel was around $175 and with the rod and line it was around $350. Then I wanted sinking line and that was $109 just for the line. Gets expensive but they are sure fun! Glad to loan it to you for a weekend it you would like to try it out. JOE

| SHould have added that the rod is a Temple Fork Outfitters 8wt, 9', 4 piece professional series. Have landed 20+ pound salmon and steelhead, tons of fun! Fishing the west coast I almost always trolled a surface fly on this whenever we were fishing. JOE

That is the rod that I ALMOST bought. I ended up with an Orvis 9wt though. It (the Orvis) had a faster action, and was more like my Loomis 5wt that I was already used to. That TFO is a great rod for the money. Bass Pro has a pretty good price on them and will have several reels in the $100+ range. I got the Sage 1680 for $98. I havent used it enough to offer an opinion of it though.

| Sage makes awesome rods. Most that I have used though are in the 700+ range. I am from Washington and Sages are built about 20 minutes from my old house.

| For an all-around rod for salt and fresh water bass, go with an 8 wt. S/A makes a combo eerything included for around 99$. Good beginners outfit. Too bad they still don't make the RedBone rods.I run a 10 wt and 13 wt on those with large arbor reels on them.
Life is too short to skip fishing.

| I have a Redington 8 wt. combo that I use for bass. Have not tried it for light saltwater yet, but I suspect that it would do just fine. Believe I paid around $250 for the combo, a case, line, backing, and shipping. Not too bad compared to similar packages. Purchased the combo from www.reelflyrod.com and cannot complain about the transaction.

| Another idea is to order one of the Combos from Cabelas. I had one a few years ago and it was great for the money. Not sure if they still do but at the time they would replace it if it broke, even if you stepped on it. Was a great rod for not much money. I think it was around $200 for the combo.
