I just picked up a Penn spinning reel at a pawn shop. I'm pretty sure it's a, I think a 704z, but I can't tell b/c most of the markings are wore off. When I first got it, I thought maybe it was one of the smaller ones, but now that I play with it a bit, I'm not so sure. I don't have any other older Penn's for comparison...just sold my 706, which it is smaller than that. Functionally, it appears to be in top notch shape. The drag washers all look practically new. It has a bail. I can't tell the lb. line ratings, but as far as capacity of line it has 300, 250, 200. Any ideas? I can post a picture, but you wouldn't be able to judge the size of it.
I paid $39.99 fwiw and it had some crappy two piece rod with it.

| bingo. 704z. and if the rod is worth anything at all, you got a deal - in my opinion the reel would be worth about 30-40 so if the rod is worth anything you did fine. the Z series are pretty easy to work on, and you can add a manual kit to the 704 very easily for about $15.

| It is not a 704. Looks like a 710 to me, look inside the rotor cup to see if it has any numbers inside.

The picture does look a bit deceiving...I noticed that after I posted it. I fished with someone that had a 710z yesterday, and it is bigger than that one.

| actually... i think i was wrong. looking at the drag knob. i believe its a 710. and the capacities might be correct because the 704 only goes up to 275 yards of 20. travis, james, you guys win

| I'm still guessing a 710. The spool of a 704 is the same shape as a 706, it doesn't have the crown of a 710, or 712.

That is in no way a 704z.From the size comparison with the 750 I am goona say either a 710 or 712 most likely the 712 and if you gave that price for either one and it is working good then you got a good deal.

I think you might be right on with the 712z. I don't see any #'s inside the rotor. Thanks for the help folks. I figured with the nasty weather out I might tease up everyone's brain a little.

| i figured it out!!!!! if it truley bigger than a 710z...then theres a reel that penn tried for two years and they diddnt sell enough so they stoped making them and it was a "medium" reel between a 704z and a 710z.....its called a 708z!!! might sound cooly but true! i really diddent belive it myself at first untill i asked around!!!!

| On the othe side of the bail (not the roller side), if the bail wire goes through a nut, it is a 710. If it is held on by a slotted machine screw it is a 712.
